Our Almost Century of Rich History

Ogontz White Mountain Camp started back in 1850 when Chestnut Street Female Seminary opened their doors in Philadelphia. Enrollment boomed and the school needed a new home with more space. Jay Cooke of Elkins Park, Pennsylvania rented his land to the school and renamed his mansion after a dear friend, Chief Ogontz, a Sandusky Indian. Chestnut Street Female Seminary became known as Ogontz School for Girls. In 1912, principal Abby Sutherland opened a summer camp in northern New Hampshire as a summer extension of the program in Pennsylvania. The two projects eventually separated and Ogontz Camp began to function as an independent camp in 1923. Today most of the existing cabins and structures are still in use, blending the rich history of Ogontz with some modern amenities creating an unforgettable experience.
