Franconia Notch State Park

 27 minutes from Ogontz

Location: Flume Gorge, Daniel Webster Hwy, Lincoln, NH 03251.

About: Franconia Notch State Park has been attracting visitors for well over 200 years, long before it was made into a park. Even famed writer and naturalist Henry David Thoreau spent time here. Take a page from his book (pun intended) and explore Franconia Notch and all of its breathtaking beauty! If you can only do one thing, definitely check out Flume Gorge. Over thousands of years, Flume Brook wore the winding gorge into the solid granite that now forms the walls. Inside, it's secluded-- just you, the bubbling creek, and the verdant green plants. While you are here, stop at the Flume Gorge Visitor Center and walk through the renowned Flume Gorge, ride the exciting aerial tramway at Cannon Mountain, and visit the New England Ski Museum. Take your time, stop for a swim at Echo Lake, net a trout while fly fishing at Profile Lake, ride your bike on the Recreational Trail, watch for rock climbers, hawks, and falcons on Cannon Cliffs, or hike on the Appalachian Trail.

The Mount Washington Cog Railway

50min from Ogontz

Location: 3168 Base Station Rd., Bretton Woods, NH 03549

About: The Cog is the first mountain-climbing cog railway in the world, and the only one currently operating in North America. With an average grade of 25% (some sections approach nearly 38%), it’s also the second steepest in the world! Motive power is primarily provided by a fleet of seven powerful biodiesel locomotives, each custom designed, built and maintained on site. And with a nod to its steam heritage, the railway also continues to operate a pair of century-old, coal-fired steam engines.

Located in the heart of the majestic White Mountains region of northern New Hampshire, Marshfield Base Station is 6 miles east of Route 302 on the western face of Mount Washington. Even the drive along Base Station Road is beautiful– every twist and turn reveals new perspectives on the Presidential Range. Make sure to stop for some pictures at Upper Ammonoosuc Falls, an impressive rocky cascade and popular swimming hole just a few yards off the road. And keep your eyes open for wildlife- moose and bear sightings are not uncommon along the Base road!
